Later that night, I got a call on my cell phone.
“Hello?” I asked as I answered the call
“Hey, this is Mitchell”
“Oh, hey”
“Oh, hey”
“Do you think you’ll be free on Saturday? There is going to be a party at my house and you’re invited” Me? Invited to a party with a lot of people?
“Yeah, I’m free” Although I’m not good with people, I still wanted to try step out of my comfort zone.
“Cool, I’ll tell you the rest of the details on Friday”
“Okay, thanks”
“Bye Ape” I heard a little laugh before the phone disconnected.
My hair was a mess, it wasn’t cut evenly and that meant I had to cut it even shorter. I walked to my mirror, grabbed my scissors and started cutting my hair. I didn’t want it long anyway, even though I promised him to keep it long.
“Apriiiil!” He would always call me when I was playing with my Barbie
“What?” the expression on my face made him laugh which I found really irritating.
“I like your hair” he smiled “Long is cool” Back then my hair was long and reached my butt. My mum made me cut it a few years later. I was around the age 6 when I had to promise him that I wouldn’t cut it again till we were 16. I guess that promise was meant to be broken anyway. Oh well, he’ll understand when he wakes up.
Remembering that he was in a coma always brought tears to my eyes, but this time instead of tears, I just felt slightly angry. Mostly towards my self, seeing that it was my fault.
My hair was on the floor, just lying there. I laughed at the thought of it being on my head. The person I saw in the mirror looked different and a bit more attractive.
By 11:00 I was in bed, looking at my ceiling. Slowly after hours of thinking, I doze off.
I wake up and look at my clock and it reads ‘06:30’. I must’ve fell asleep thinking.
Once I’m at school I go and look for Mitchell, trying really hard to avoid Misty and her gang. When I finally spot him I run up to him, which surprises me.
“Hi, Mitch” trying to hide the happiness in my voice. Wait, did I just call him Mitch? Woops
“Hey, Ape” his smile can make me melt any day. Suddenly he looked at me differently; I wonder if he notices my hair. “Did you get a hair cut?”
“Um, yes. I cut it myself yesterday” I couldn’t help but blush
“Oh, I love it”. As he leaned forward I thought he was going to kiss me, but just whispered in my ear. “See you in class” He chuckled and walked away. I don’t know why I’m suddenly feeling this way for him, is it because I am grateful for him saving me yesterday and making me smile when no one else could.
When Friday came by I couldn’t help but walk up to Mitchell myself and ask him for the details.
“Okay, it’s starts at 7:30pm. Sound’s good?”
“Yeah, it does” I smiled at him.
The next day I woke up really early to get my hair curled. I wanted to wear something flattering so I looked inside my closet and the only clothes I owned that was in colour was my dress I wore on the day of Danny’s accident; I don’t think I can wear that to a party even if I wanted to.
Finally I picked out the best outfit I could. Black boots with my short black dress which I wear with black stockings. I know, it’s still all black, but what can I do?
“April, you seem happier than before. What’s exciting about this party?” mom had a cheeky grin on her face.
“I don’t know.” I lied.
“Okay then”.
I walked over to the bus stop at 6:30pm. Daniel was there before me.
“Hi Ape” he smiled. It wasn’t the same as Mitchell’s smile.
“Hi. Please don’t call me Ape” Mitchell is the one that usually calls me Ape. Though it sounds kind of insulting, I still like it.
“Why not?” he frowned.
“Because ... It’s like an indirect way of you calling me an ape.”
“Oh, sorry”. It got silent after that. No one talked till we reached the party.
